Ras Gayint Multipurpose Farmers Cooperative Union is owned by democratically organized by farmers’ cooperatives in the region of Amhara South Gondar administrative zone. It is by now working in 3 woredas called Tach Gayint, Lay Gayint and Semada woredas. Ras Gayint is situated in a semi-altitude area bordering the famous Simien mountain range with high potential for cash crop production of beans, chickpeas, lentil and malt barley production. Currently the union has 2 warehouses which have a capacity of 3,500 MT. The union was established in 2005 by 21 producer cooperatives representing 32,080 member farmers (580 females). The member primary cooperatives have grown to 32 which represent 54,500 individual member farmers (1,200 females). The initial capital was 1.4 million Ethiopian Birr (ETB) while currently its capital has grown to 3.2 million ETB. Ras Gayint’s vision is to see sustainable and strong cooperatives emerge in Ethiopia engaging itself from farm to final market.
