The Kotton Development and Investment Company Ltd (KODI) is a local Malawi company that contracts smallholder cotton growers in an outgrower scheme for the seed multiplication of certified cotton seed in the rural cotton growing areas of Malawi. The company supplies certified cotton seed to smallholder farmers through various distribution network in the rural areas. Processed cotton lint is exported to Thailand, Singapore, Italy, Portugal, Spain and South Africa. It also outsources spinning capacity for its lint. It has an oil mill from which it produces edible oil and oil cake and animal protein. With over 2089 registered smallholder cotton growers including some blind farmers, KODI was founded in 2007 on the principle of Umunthu to liberate the rural poor from poverty through premium farmgate prices for their seed cotton produced under the outgrower scheme and the application of best practices in cotton production. KODI is Malawi's first in certified cotton seed production.
