What is NOPAL?
Nopal is a plant native of Mexico and the Southwestern United States. Its scientific name is Opuntia Ficus-indica. It is classified as a vegetable by the United States Department of Agriculture and is commonly known in English as “prickly pear cactus”. For centuries, Nopal has been used as a source of food and as a medicinal. The ancient Aztecs, an indigenous people native to Mexico, used Nopal to rid the body of intestinal parasites, to promote the secretion and excretion of urine, to strengthen the lungs, to increase milk production for mothers, to cure abscesses and to heal wounds. Ancient use of Nopal has evolved over the centuries into its use today to manage blood sugar levels (diabetes), to regulate cholesterol levels (heart disease) and to treat liver problems (hepatitis, etc.).
